T h e S o m e o f O u r P a r t s Some will be given to carry a load Some will be made to explode Some will be given to thrill and to shine Some will be made to write lines Some will be dressed in the latest of fashion Some will be talkers inspired by the times Some will be given enough just to ration Some will have others on their minds Some will pursue what is true for the moment Some will speak out with what they think is the news Some will recall what other's cannot believe in Some will be conscious in the ways that they choose Some will paint angels and dance 'round the seasons using what others discard in their haste Some will build fires to cook with and dance around knowing there's no time to waste Some will be teachers and climbers of mountains Some will bear children who'll laugh in the sun Some travel highways unused and forgotten Some spin the world all in fun Take a good look at the world you come from: Is it the way you'd have it to be? Some will bring changes by the depth of their breathing Some will help others see

P u r p l e M a r t i n purple martin, purple martin the way you sing on the wind you fly you give me glimpses of dreams long forgotten i never need to ask you why your colours show amidst the tree green your voice like raindrops in my ear never have i seen a bird so gentle never have i heard a voice so clear along the highway where the crow flies where the sun beats down upon the dust from the shade where i am sitting i hear a melody from you i can trust from distant shores across the water the elder tribes sing to the land emerging from the mighty ocean new creatures dance upon the sand you came to me as i lay sleeping through restless dreams we shared the sound flying so high above the canyon our silhouette cast down to the ground for many years my heart felt empty as if i had no other choice now the martin flies beside me so long i've needed the sound of that voice

L a y M y B o d y D o w n O, I will lay my body down by the sound of moving water so the gurgling flow when I close my eyes is all my ears will hear. O, I will lay my body down in fields of ripened colour where swallowtail butterflies and creatures wild and knowing are stepping lightly to the music of a hundred heartbeats singing. There I will surely lay me down in the morning of my evening to pass my days in gratitude with all the world just a passing hue as if to say every lesson gained is important to all we do O, I will lay my weary tune in fragrant fertile valleys where hawks are soaring overhead and the world is vast and open; where the winds will fill my sails and the light pours bright and golden There I will surely lay me down in joy will I surrender as the energy returns to sea to sail the timeless splendour...

A W o r l d L i g h t Y e a r s A w a y Talk to me in a simple tongue so your words stay fresh in my mind Sing for me a melody and your words will naturally rhyme Take me to that place innside not limited by time I will try not to hide when my feelings flood my eyes Raise your spirits toward the heavens, hold your glass up high Lay aside your worryshackles and burst the bonds that bind Bring me a breath of refreshing air from a land I knew before We're all just learning how to share, no need to hurry anymore Long ago some nights in armour arose from a pile of dust Swords in hand they fought for honour and turned away in disgust While on a world light years away, spinning slient through the void Voices are raised to fill the sky: "This planet will not be destroyed!" Falling crawling reaching calling: is anybody near? Honest words with warmth and meaning are music to my ears Hear the ocean's mighty roar, the breakers crash against the rocks It's a sound I can't ignore two thousand miles from the docks All of our lives we've spent in passage with so much left undone Why criticize each other's efforts instead of reaching toward the sun? Come gather 'round while we still can, Hellhounds are baying at the moon Feel the trembling in the land, we cannot love too much too soon Oooh...my head begins to spin... Around and around and around and around again Oooh...my head begins to spin...

T h e H o u s e A c r o s s t h e S t r e e t Tried to write so many times just can't seem to find the lines just can't seem to land the words my attempts seem so unsure... Ever seem to wake at last remembering every moment past leaning heard on shadows cast scuffling in the dirt? Take me in your heart so I can fly around that beat Tell me of the time that's left in the house across the street and, while we shuffle across the floor the distance of the room, Take me in your heart beneath the big harvest moon Explanations were always brief we dropped our mouths in disbelief we closed our eyes with some relief rolling off our brows but for every song we've never sung and every time we felt too young and every time we've dared to hope regardless of the odds: Take me in your heart so I can fly around that beat Tell me of the time that's left in the house across the street and, while we shuffle across the floor the distance of the room, Take me in your heart beneath the big harvest moon Shadows flicker across the wall they rise up high and start to fall with bent down knees I slowly crawl along the dusty floors. For every moment I hesitate for every thought I contemplate so many voices congregate pounding on my doors Down through all the ages past mankind cries and go too fast so afraid to be the last statue in the dust... Take me in your heart so I can fly around that beat Tell me of the time that's left in the house across the street and, while we shuffle across the floor the distance of the room, Take me in your heart beneath the big full harvest moon

S w e e p M e O f f M y F e e t Sweep me off my feet The moon's full and rising if you need an excuse It's you I came to meet; Not so surprising, we've asked for all we've produced Not many people understand when there's nothing to say And when I try to speak up the words, they get in the way... There's nothing like the moonlight Dogs are barking and the grass is a sparkling jewel Believe me when I tell you In the bloodstream of the universe this world is just a molecule Too many people think they're only the sound of their name That sense of separation only shows how we're really the same ...and nobody deserves any blame. If I knew the truth, you know I'd stand on the mountain Gushing out the proof like water from a fountain But every person has potential for playing the saint... We're canvasses reaching for the paint. So sweep me off my feet Stars are falling and nobody stands to lose If everything's complete Life is holy and we've all got the power to choose And when the sundown brings another lonely night It only lasts until the morning shines down de-light – she's shining down her heavenly light!

about

Many many years ago in the days of the Reagan Administration (when a space shuttle blew up, ketchup was a vegetable, trees caused pollution and a lot of the same guys were dismantling the Constitution as today), music was available as big square 33 1/3 record albums with 12 x 12" cover art, lyric sheets and arty album labels we watched go round and round. Lubricating the Species was born, breathed out by a group of magician musicians in record time (!) and caught in an analog net like a fish reeled in on a real reel to reel with tape hiss and everything.

Originally released as a vinyl album, the digital version was remastered by Stew Urbach the original engineer, with an assist from Bill Johnson. The CD edition is dedicated to the memory of Larry Roark, the euphonium player on "Lay My Body Down" who left this mortal coil in March of 2001. The fabulous cover art was done by Nancy McGalliard.
