lyrics

P u r p l e M a r t i n

purple martin, purple martin
the way you sing on the wind you fly
you give me glimpses of dreams long forgotten
i never need to ask you why
your colours show amidst the tree green
your voice like raindrops in my ear
never have i seen a bird so gentle
never have i heard a voice so clear

along the highway where the crow flies
where the sun beats down upon the dust
from the shade where i am sitting
i hear a melody from you i can trust
from distant shores across the water
the elder tribes sing to the land
emerging from the mighty ocean
new creatures dance upon the sand

you came to me as i lay sleeping
through restless dreams we shared the sound
flying so high above the canyon
our silhouette cast down to the ground
for many years my heart felt empty
as if i had no other choice
now the martin flies beside me
so long i've needed the sound of that voice
